Description
The Paddocks is a cottage dating from 1848, designed by F.O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It was altered in the late 19th century and again in the late 20th century. The original part is constructed from monk bond brickwork on a stone plinth, with a slate roof. The original layout consisted of three rooms across the front, one room deep, with a later 19th-century leanto extension rebuilt, and a late 20th-century rear wing forming an āLā shape, all of single-storey height. The windows are small-paned and are late 20th-century wooden casements. The central room slightly projects, featuring a gabled, late 20th-century brick porch with a panelled door and single-light windows in the returns. There are single-light windows on either side, with rendered reveals and flat, rubbed brick arches; the arch on the right is original, while the one on the left has been rebuilt. A plain brick string course runs along the foot of the gable, returning up the verges, accompanied by plain bargeboards and shaped brackets at the foot, as well as a quatrefoil stone ventilator. Two-light casement windows are positioned either side; these have been slightly widened, with rendered reveals and an original flat rubbed brick arch to the right and a rebuilt head on the left. A double oversailing eaves course is present. A central rear chimney is visible, and the gable chimneys are slightly corbelled out. The cottage is part of a Chartist settlement and is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance.
