Description
Copeland's Cottage is a cottage built in 1848 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with minor alterations since its construction. It features painted brickwork, a stone plinth, and a slate roof. The cottage is designed with three rooms, one room deep, and has a lean-to extending across the entire rear, making it a single storey structure. All openings have rendered reveals. The central bay projects slightly and includes a half-glazed door accessed by two stone steps, with two flush panels below and marginal lights above, topped by a rubbed brick arch. There are eight-pane single-light casement windows on each side, also with rubbed brick arches. A plain brick string course runs along the foot of the gable, which has a quatrefoil stone ventilator above, fretwork bargeboards, and a timber finial at the apex. Each wing has similar two-light casement windows, and there is a double brick oversailing course at the eaves. The cottage has chimneys at the centre rear and gable. Inside, there are four-panel doors and a plain stone surround to the fireplace in the left room, along with corner paterae. This cottage is part of a Chartist settlement and is likely one of the least altered cottages in the area. It forms a group with Copelands and Laburnam Cottage and is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance, likely originally associated with a two-acre holding.
