Description

The Orchards is a cottage dating back to 1848, designed by F O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It is constructed with brick walls and has a slate roof. The cottage consists of three rooms at the front, with a single-story rear lean-to extension, all on one level. A creeper covers the front walls. The central room slightly projects forward and features a half-glazed door recessed within two stone steps, with small windows at the top and two flush panels below. Above the door is a hipped, lean-to timber porch with a trellis head. There are single-light, eight-pane casement windows on either side, and a hidden quatrefoil ventilator in the gable. The verge rafters are plain. Further two-light casements, each with eight panes, are located in the wings to either side. Chimneys are present on the gable and rear centre. It is likely an unaltered example, and was originally part of a four-acre holding. The cottage forms part of a Chartist settlement and is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance.
