Description

Lyndale is a cottage dating from 1848, built for F.O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It was altered and extended in the mid to late 18th century. The cottage is constructed of white-painted brick walls upon a stone plinth, with a slate roof. It originally comprised three rooms across the front, one room deep, and is a single storey. A new rear extension was built in 1985 and is not of particular interest. The central room projects slightly and now features a later gabled brick porch with a half-glazed front door accessed by a single step; the porch has a single light casement in each return. There are single-light, eight-pane windows on either side of the front wall. A plain brick string course runs to the foot of the gable and returns up the verges. A gable vent is hidden by the porch roof, and there are plain verge rafters. Two-light, glazing bar casement windows are found in each wing, with a single oversailing course to the eaves. End chimneys, slightly corbelled out, rise from the ridge. Originally, the cottage was accompanied by a four-acre plot. It forms part of a Chartist settlement and is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance.
