Description
Glendale is a cottage built in 1848 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with later alterations. It features monk bond brickwork on a stone plinth and has a slate roof. The cottage has a three-room front and is one room deep, with a lean-to at the rear and is single storey. The front has mid to late 20th century doors and windows, with the windows in the wings being slightly wider than the original ones, all topped with flat, rubbed brick arches. The centre room projects slightly and has a fully-glazed door accessed by one step, with a single-light window on each side. There is a plain string course at the foot of the gable, which returns up the verge, and a quatrefoil vent in the gable. The verge rafters are plain and supported on consoles at the foot. The wings have two-light casements and a double oversailing brick course at the eaves. There are chimneys at both the gable and centre rear, with the gable ones slightly corbelled out. Originally, the cottage had a 2-acre holding and is part of a group with other Chartist cottages and a school, making it significant for its historical and sociological interest.
