Description
The dovecote at Staunton Court is a 17th-century structure. It features coursed, squared stone at the base, with close-studded timber framing above and painted brick nogging, topped by a tiled roof. The building is square and divided into three stages externally. Facing the yard, there is a boarded door in the center, with a stone lean-to projecting on the right side, which has a boarded door as well. The timber framing above the door head level is in two stages, with long braces connecting the corner posts to the sill of the lower stage, and thin slats forming rails in three panels. The second stage has no braces and includes a full-height, two-light window in the center. The roof is hipped, with a glover on a short ridge and a swept pyramid shape. The framing on the right return features braces to the corner posts at the top level. Inside, the dovecote is open to the roof, with walls lined in brick and said to accommodate 1,000 nests, complete with ledges. It has two trusses with collar and tie beams, three vertical struts, and principals joined at the top by a yoke, with one pair of purlins. The dovecote forms a group with the nearby church, house, and other farm buildings.
