Description
Moat Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1848 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It was enlarged in the 19th century and altered in the 20th century. The building features thin, rough render on stone walls, rendered quoins, a stone plinth, and a slate roof. It has a three-room front that is one room deep, with a lean-to at the rear and a small wing, all of which are single storey.
The entrance front has an original half-glazed front door with two flush panels below, situated under an open timber porch supported by two posts, with a boarded gable and a felt roof. There are single light windows from the mid-20th century on either side of the door, and a trefoil ventilator in the gable above. The plain verge rafters rest on consoles at the foot. Each wing contains an original two-light casement window with small panes and a rendered surround. The farmhouse has chimneys on the gable and at the center rear, as well as an additional chimney on the gable of the added wing on the right. There is a brick stable block beyond that is not of special interest. Originally, the farmhouse was part of a four-acre holding and was associated with a Chartist settlement. It is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance.
