Description
Fair Bank is a cottage built in 1848 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It has been altered in the mid to late 20th century. The exterior features wet dash to the stone walls, rendered quoins, and a stone plinth, with a smooth render on the left return and a slate roof. The front of the cottage has a three-room layout, with a leanto at the rear and a flat-roofed extension, all at a single storey. The entrance includes a fully-glazed late 20th-century door accessed by two steps, flanked by single-light late 20th-century windows. Above the door, there is a trefoil vent in the gable, and the verge rafters are plain on consoles. On the left wing, there is a two-light late 20th-century casement window, while the right wing features a two-light original casement with small panes. The cottage has gable chimneys that are slightly corbelled out. Fair Bank is part of a Chartist settlement and was originally associated with a three-acre holding. It is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance.
