Description
The Bungalow is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O'Connor. The rear of the building was rebuilt in the mid-20th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork on a stone plinth with a slate roof, although the rear has a felt covering. The house has a three-bay front and is two rooms deep, all on a single storey. The slightly projecting gabled center bay has a half-glazed front door accessed by three stone steps, with marginal lights in the upper half and two flush panels below. There is a single-light small-pane window on each side of the door. A plain brick string course runs along the foot of the gable, and there is a stone quatrefoil ventilator above. The verge has plain rafters supported by shaped corbels. On either side of the center bay, there are two-light small-pane casement windows, with a slightly projecting brick eaves course above. All openings maintain their original pattern, featuring rendered reveals and painted flat rubbed brick arches. The brick chimneys at the end gables corbel out slightly, with an additional chimney at the center rear. The Bungalow is a well-preserved example with little alteration to the front and is listed for its historical and sociological significance, forming a group with other Chartist cottages. Originally, it was set on a three-acre plot.
