Description
The Byways is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O'Connor, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork on a stone plinth with a chamfered top and a slate roof. The house has three bays and is one and a half rooms deep, designed as a single storey. The central bay projects slightly and has a gable above it. There is a half-glazed door accessed by two stone steps, with a narrow casement window on each side. Each wing has a two-light casement window, all of which are set under flat rubbed brick arches. The door and windows were updated in the late 20th century. A plain string course runs along the centre gable, with slightly projecting brick courses at the eaves and verge. A stone quatrefoil ventilator is located in the gable, and the verge rafters rest on shaped corbels. The house has a central rear brick chimney. It is included in the register primarily for its historical and sociological significance and forms a group with other Chartist cottages. Originally, it was situated on a 4-acre plot.
