Description
Little Bage is a farmhouse located in Dorstone, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations from the late 17th century, early 19th century, and 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, and includes some timber-framing with rubble infill, topped with a concrete tile roof. It has an L-plan layout, with one wing extending to the north from the mid-17th century and another wing added to the east in the early 19th century. The north/south wing has three roof bays and two rooms on the ground floor, featuring a lateral stack on the west wall that provides corner fireplaces.
The north front of the building is two storeys high, with the 17th-century wing projecting to the right. This gable was rebuilt in the early 18th century and features a two-light fixed casement on the first floor under a timber lintel. The left wing has a two-light fixed casement on the right side, while the ground floor includes a four-pane boxed sash window and an entrance to the right, which has a small single fixed light casement to the right under the same timber lintel, leading to a ledged door.
Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered and stopped beams, and the roof trusses each have two raking struts. The original stack was likely on the north gable but was replaced in the late 17th century by a new stack on the west wall; the original stack may have had an adjoining spiral staircase. The present staircase, located in the added wing, dates from the early 19th century and features stick balusters.
