Description
Upper Pen-y-lan is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the mid-16th century and 20th-century additions. The building is constructed of rendered rubble and has a concrete tile roof. It features four roof bays and a stack located to the east of the central truss, along with a late 20th-century extension at the north-east corner. The farmhouse has one storey with an attic, which is illuminated by two 20th-century flat-roofed dormers. There are five windows of various sizes, all of which are 20th-century casements, and a glazed door is positioned to the left of the right window.
Inside, the farmhouse contains three cruck trusses, with the central truss being arch-braced, indicating that the original structure included an open hall in the two central bays. The west bay features moulded ceiling beams, likely from the 15th century, while ceilings in the other bays were inserted in the late 16th century and are all stop-chamfered. A stack was added at the same time, accompanied by a spiral staircase on the north side. Additionally, there is a stud-and-plank partition in the east bay, which makes the east room only half a bay in size.
