Description
Lower Middlewood is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with brick infill, some of which is rendered, and has a slate roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with an east/west range that has a gabled roof and a north/south range attached. The east/west range consists of three rooms, with a stack positioned between the two western rooms, while the north/south range contains two rooms with an intervening stack.
The house is two storeys high, with one section having an attic. The east front has a gabled wing on the left, where the gable is rendered and there is 19th-century brickwork below. The fenestration is irregular, featuring a two-light 20th-century casement window on the first floor and two 20th-century casements below. To the right, there are two 20th-century gabled dormers on the first floor. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a wooden cross mullioned window with a square stone label, and to the right, a small casement window. The west gable is constructed of rubble and has a central stack that is corbelled out from the wall for a fireplace on the first floor. The entrance is located in the north gable.
The external framing is fragmentary but visible in the east/west range, where the two eastern rooms form two bays. The south wall displays framing, including straight angle braces. Inside the east gable, intersecting raking struts create a decorative effect. The interior features some stop-chamfered ceiling beams, and both main stacks retain timber lintels. In the south room of the north/south range, there is a rectangular enclosure made of stud-and-plank against the wall, which may have served as a former buttery or stair enclosure.
