Description

Barley Knapp Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of rubble and features a slate and corrugated iron roof. The layout consists of a four-room plan aligned north to south, with two central rooms that include a stack to the south and an adjoining spiral staircase from the early 17th century. The kitchen is located to the south and has a large stack on the gable, dating from the late 17th century, while a former scullery was added to the north end in the mid-18th century.

The west front of the farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with a wide entry to the right of the left room that features a chamfered and stopped surround. This left room has a straight joint connecting it to the two central rooms. Above the two windows are two raked top dormers; to the left is a horizontally sliding sash window, and to the right is a two-light casement. The stack is straight jointed to the last room and to the right (south) room, which has an entrance to the left with a ledged door that has strap hinges, and to the right of this door is another two-light casement.

Inside, the north wall of the earliest part of the farmhouse is timber-framed, with square panels filled with wattle and daub. It is likely that the earliest house was originally timber-framed with a rubble stack at the gable.
