Description

Urishay Chapel is a former private chapel that dates back to the early 12th century, with extensions made in the late 12th century and alterations from the 16th and 17th centuries. It underwent restorations in 1911 and between 1982 and 1984. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof. The early 12th-century nave has a chancel added in the late 12th century, which replaced an apse. The nave is now in ruins, with a rendered concrete block wall from the 1980s located about one meter west of the chancel arch.

The chancel features a north wall with a priest's door that has a semi-circular head and a late 20th-century ledged door. The east end contains a window, likely from the early 16th century, with a 4-centred head. The south wall has a small window with a semi-circular head to the east and a square-headed window, probably from the 17th century, to the west. In the nave, the north wall has a narrow square-headed light, formerly with a semi-circular head, at the east end. The south wall features a pointed-headed window, likely from the 16th century, at the east end and a south door with a semi-circular head at the west end. The west wall has two single light square-headed windows at different heights, probably from the 17th century, with the north window incorporating a reset lintel from a window that had two square-headed lights.

Inside the chancel, remnants of the outer jambs of a late 12th-century east window can be seen in the east wall. The chancel arch is a simple timber lintel, and the roof was replaced in the late 20th century. The nave retains a 19th-century font base, and the north door features decorative strap hinges and a latch from the 17th century. There is also a medieval altar slab with five consecration crosses. The chapel was associated with Urishay Castle, which is located immediately to the south. It is currently cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
