Description
Penlan Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with alterations and additions from the 17th century and later. It is constructed of rubble, partially rendered, and has an asbestos tile roof. The building is L-shaped, with the original 16th-century section aligned north to south, and a later section added at right angles to the east. The 16th-century part consists of two bays and features a chimney stack at the north end, along with a spiral staircase located to the west of the stack. The other wing, likely from the 17th century, has about three roof bays and includes a former early 19th-century granary at the east end.
On the south front, there is a gabled cross-wing to the left with one range of windows, featuring early 19th-century casements under timber lintels. The other range has two gabled dormers in the attic and three windows with 20th-century two-light casements, with the entrance located to the left. A gabled dormer is also present on the west return front. Inside, the 16th-century cross-wing contains three cruck trusses and ceiling beams that are stopped and chamfered. The walls of this section were likely originally timber-framed.
