Description
Crossways House is a house that dates back to the early 17th century, with extensions made in the early 18th century and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rendered brick and has a concrete tile roof. The building is L-shaped, with a rear wing from the early 17th century extending to the southwest, and a front section from the early 18th century extending to the northwest, featuring gable-end stacks.
The northeast front of the house is two storeys high, with a band at the ground floor and rusticated brick quoins. It has four early 19th-century sash windows on the upper floor and three similar windows on the ground floor. The entrance is located off-centre to the left and features a wooden doorcase with a flat canopy supported by consoles, leading to a half-glazed door.
Inside, there is a Chinese Chippendale balustrade on the staircase. The rear wing shows exposed framing with chamfered and stopped beams. An early 18th-century built-in dresser is located in the northeast corner of two rooms. At the northeast end of this wing, where it meets the early 18th-century front, there is a stack with an adjoining spiral staircase. A keystone reset in a gate pier about 25 metres northeast of the house, which is not included in the listing, provides a clue to the date of the 18th-century works, marked "1742/TP", which matches the initials "TP" scratched into the lintel of the fireplace in the southeast room.
