Description
Upper Pen-y-park is a longhouse that has been converted into a cow house. It likely dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with an extension added in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble and has a corrugated iron roof over stone slate, featuring an end stack on the left side, which is connected to a 19th-century house. The longhouse is one storey with an attic, consisting of four bays. There are two small square windows on the left side and three doors positioned in the center and right, all spaced fairly evenly. A loft-entry is located at the right gable.
The 19th-century part connects to the longhouse across the end stack and has two windows on each floor, all of which are six-pane sashes, with the entrance situated in front of the stack. Inside, the longhouse features a large oak lintel from the 17th century above the fireplace and shows signs of upper floor joists in its two domestic bays on the left. An internal buttress is located between the right-hand window and the left-hand door, marking the division between human and animal accommodation. The first roof truss to the right of the fireplace includes an interrupted truss for a door, while the second truss has a central post extending from the tie to the collar and light scantling arranged in a herringbone pattern, partially covered by plaster. The right truss has raking struts connecting the tie to the rafters. The building is a notable feature in the landscape.
