Description
Pike's Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a store, likely built in the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed from coursed drystone rubble and features stone slate, corrugated iron, and asbestos roofs. The building has a central stack and a hipped roof on the left section, with an end stack on the right gable.
The farmhouse is arranged in an L-plan, which is a local adaptation of the longhouse type, consisting of a four-cell layout on the right side. This layout includes a stair and chimney area, a principal room, a cross-passage, and an additional cell that connects to a left-hand return wing used for services and animals. The right side has a two-storey front with one window, featuring three lights on the ground floor and four on the first floor, although both windows were covered at the time of the last survey in 1984. The upper window may have had diamond section mullions. The entrance is located to the left near the junction with the return wing, sheltered by a corrugated iron canopy and accessed through a ledged 19th-century door.
The rear elevation has a two-window front; the left side includes a former five-light diamond section mullioned window now reduced to three lights under a label, while the right side has another window at the rear junction of the two ranges that originally had three mullions. Above the first window, slightly to the right, is a partly blocked mullioned window of the same size, retaining one mullion and the openings for another.
The left part of the farmhouse is one storey with an attic, featuring a three-light casement window on the right side and a smaller two-light casement on the left, with a ledged 19th-century door to its right. Inside the right part, there is a plank and muntin screen, and beneath a large deeply chamfered beam, two elliptical-headed doorways lead into the left cell of the main range. The principal room on the right side has a newel staircase located at the rear of the fireplace and two chamfered beams that divide the ceiling into three sections. The left part of the return range is a cowhouse, while the right part of the return range was not inspected. Overall, Pike's Farmhouse is a remarkably complete example of a developed longhouse that incorporates areas for animals and services, reflecting a blend of traditional planning.
