Description
Old Kates is a 17th-century farmhouse constructed from coursed dry stone rubble, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The building features two rooms, with a hearth and a bread oven located at the east end. It has two low storeys, and the upper floor is open to the roof. There is a window to the left of the center, a small first-floor window to the right of the center above a doorway with a planked 20th-century door, and a large window frame in the rear wall that has holes for five diamond section oak mullions.
Inside, there is evidence of a plank and muntin partition, and the fire-surround includes stone cheeks with an oak lintel that has broach chamfer-stops. To the left of the fireplace, there is access to a winding newel stair, which has a rebate in the back wall for a former staircase door. The staircase features oak treads, a corbelled roof, and is illuminated by a small square window. The roof structure includes three purlins and interrupted tie-beam trusses, with an opening between two upper rooms. The rafters are pegged to the upper purlin, and the lowest purlin has a carved underside for the upper window head. The upper fireplace and staircase are accessed through a segmental head. The construction of Old Kates is very similar to that of Lower House Farmhouse.
