Description

Barns Farmhouse is a 17th-century, one-and-a-half storey farmhouse built of whitewashed rubble stone, topped with a slate roof featuring a tile ridge. The building has an outshut to the west and a lean-to attached to the north gable. The east front is marked by end chimney stacks, with a 20th-century brick stack on the right and a stone stack on the left. A gabled dormer, positioned below the eaves, contains 20th-century casements with three over three panes. The ground floor features a 17th-century two-light diamond mullion window with a dripstone on the left and a 17th-century four-light reverse chamfer mullion window with a timber lintel on the right. The south gable is rendered and has incised lines that simulate ashlar. It includes mid-20th-century metal casements: a three over three over three pane casement on the ground floor, and a single three pane and a three over three casement on the upper floor. The west elevation has a four-light reverse chamfer mullion window on the left and a four-light diamond mullion window in the outshut on the right.

The farmhouse has a two-unit plan from the 17th century, consisting of a hall and partitioned service rooms. Entry is through a gable with a 19th-century boarded door. The interior features stone flagged floors, and the hall has chamfered ceiling beams, one with diagonal stops and the other with scroll stops. There is a 20th-century fireplace surround with a fireplace stair to the left. A 17th-century post and panel partition contains two central doorways with shaped door-heads, leading to rear service rooms that are separated by a similar post and panel partition.
