Description

Great Cefn Farmhouse is probably a 17th-century farmhouse. It is constructed of rubble with stone slate and corrugated iron roofs, featuring end stacks with dripstones. The building has a two-cell plan and two storeys, with two windows at the front. The left-hand window is a late 18th- or early 19th-century 3-light metal and wood casement, while the right-hand window is a 19th-century 2-light wooden casement. Two first-floor windows have been carefully blocked with rubble. To the left of the left-hand stack is a near contemporary, single-storey and attic extension, now with a corrugated iron roof, containing a 3-light, 17th-century oak mullioned window on the ground floor. The original entrance was to the rear, leading under a rubble-piered porch into the left-hand room. The interior features A-frame roof trusses forming three bays, incorporating much re-used timber, one collar showing peg holes for a wind-brace. The right-hand room has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. These rooms are separated by a wattle-and-daub partition with thin studs, from which rises a straight, 19th-century staircase leading to the upper right-hand room. A 19th-century bread oven is located to the left of the left-hand fireplace, with access from the penthouse extension. Ground floor windows are deeply splayed with low, oak-topped cills, likely designed as window seats. Two iron casements, one with leaded glazing, possibly dating to the 17th or 18th century, survive at the first floor of the rear elevation.
