Description

Lower Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located in Chedington. It features rubble-stone walls with flint and dressed rubble-stone, topped by a thatched roof that is hipped on the left side and gabled on the right. The building has a mix of one and a half to two storeys and includes four chimney stacks. There are eight windows, with the ground floor showcasing three- and four-light stone mullions that are hollow-chamfered. To the right of the front door, there is a square projecting bay with a three-light window that also has hollow-chamfered mullions. The windows are primarily wooden and iron casements, many with small leaded lights, and feature wooden lintels and cills. The right end of the house has wooden mullions with fake lead lights. The front doors include a wooden plank door with glass lights on the left and a wooden door with muntins and ornamental strap-hinges on the right.

Inside, the current office has a deep-chamfered ceiling beam with filleted stops. The rear wing contains a Tudor-arch stone fireplace with chamfered jambs, dating from the early 17th century, along with two keeping-places in the rear wall. There is an attached service range to the west of the kitchen, which has two rooms. The roof is constructed with jointed crucks and features two sets of purlins. In the back yard, there are signs of a drive-shaft used for churning milk in the rear store.
