Description

Two barns located about 20 metres south of Lower Castleton Farmhouse date from around 1700 and the mid-18th century, with later alterations. They are constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarded, sitting on a rubble plinth, and topped with a roof made of corrugated iron and stone slate. The barns are arranged in an L-shape, with the north/south barn consisting of six framed bays and a threshing floor located north of the centre. The east/west barn has four bays, with its threshing floor situated west of the centre, and a link block that has a hipped roof returning to the mid-18th century barn.

The north/south barn features a high plinth with some blocked ventilation slits. Its framing includes single rectangular panels with straight tension braces. The intermediate trusses have a collar and tie-beam, ridge, trenched purlins, and straight angle braces beneath the tie-beam. The gables are supported by three queen struts to the collar, with V-struts in the apex. The east/west barn has framing with two square panels extending high to the wall-plate. Its intermediate trusses have two raking struts and a high collar, with all tie-beams now supported by iron girders. The west gable has three queen struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex, while the east gable features six intersecting raking struts that create a decorative effect. The interior of the link block has not been seen.
