Description

Penny's is a house dating from the 17th century, which has been altered and refaced in the late 20th century, with further modifications and additions made in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick and rendered infill set on a rubble base, along with painted brick refacing and additions. The roof is stone-tiled and laid in diminishing courses, topped with brick ridge end stacks.

The building has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a main range with two framed bays aligned east to west, and a single-bay framed wing on the south side, which is flanked by lean-to outshuts with catslide roofs. It is part two storeys, part single storey, and has an attic, with the roof raised on the north side. The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with subsidiary rails in the south wing. Only two rows of panels remain at the first-floor level on the north side of the main range, as the upper row was added when the roof was raised. A roof truss partially survives at the east end, featuring a collar and tie-beam truss with struts and a swept V-strut above the collar at the south end of the wing.

On the north front elevation, the main range has two 2-light casements with plank weatherings and a 3-light casement on the ground floor, along with three 2-light casements on the first floor. The main entrance, located to the left of center, has a flat stone canopy supported by shaped brackets and a 20th-century door. At the west end, there is a large 19th-century cross-wing that features a 3-light casement with a cambered head on both floors at its north gable end.
