Description

The Malt House is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, and parts have been rendered and refaced in painted rubble with some sections replaced with painted brick. The roof is plain tiled. The building is designed in an L-shape; the main range consists of two framed bays aligned east to west and features a large external rubble chimney with a brick stack and a former bread oven at the rear. A cross-wing, also with two framed bays, adjoins the east end and has a small external rubble chimney with a tall brick stack on its east side elevation. The house has a single storey and an attic with dormers.

The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses that have struts and V-struts above the collar, which are exposed at the west end and the rear north end of the wing. On the south front elevation, the main range has two ground floor 2-light casement windows, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and a main entrance featuring a gabled timber porch and a ledged and battened door with a moulded architrave. The gable end of the cross-wing to the right has a 3-light ground floor casement and an attic light. All windows are fitted with plank weatherings.
