Description

The barns located to the south-east of Bockleton Court are a range of two structures dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They feature weatherboarded timber framing set on a rubble stone plinth with coursed stone rubble and plain-tile roofs. The barns are arranged in an L-shaped plan, with one barn aligned north-south and the other constructed of stone.

The 17th-century framed barn consists of three bays plus an extension bay with a rubble stone gable. It has opposing 19th-century barn doors in the central bay of the original range. The roof is a single trenched-purlin type with straight wind braces and original rafters on one pitch only, supported by four trusses. The north gable-end truss features a cambered tie beam, four vertical struts, a collar, and twin raking struts above. The central trusses have cambered tie beams and twin-strut trusses with collars, while the south truss includes a cambered tie beam, a vertical strut, and a collar. The wall frames are constructed with square-panelled framing that includes posts, middle rails, and tension braces. The extension bay to the south has a gable-end truss underbuilt with stone and a single purlin roof, with restored wall framing and tension braces.

The 18th-century stone barn is a five-bay range with a link bay to the east that abuts the framed range. The south wall features a dormer to the left, a central doorway with a brick segmental arch, and various small doors and loft openings. The west gable has a central door flanked by ventilation slits and a pitching hole at loft level, all with brick segmental arches. The north wall includes three boarded door openings and two brick and stone buttresses. The roof is a triple trenched-purlin type with four twin raking-strut trusses that have high collars and cambered tie beams. Large bridging beams support the loft floor. The interiors of both barns have not been inspected.
