Description
The barns and cowshed located to the south-east of Stoke Court are a 17th century barn and an 18th century cowshed, with a 19th century link bay. The barn features a weatherboarded timber frame on a stone rubble plinth, while the cowshed is constructed from stone rubble. Both structures have plain-tile roofs and are arranged in an L-shaped plan, with the barn aligned east-west as one wing and the cowshed forming the other.
The barn was originally a three-bay threshing barn, with an extension bay to the east. The south-facing front is now partly open to the loft level, while the gable return and rear are weatherboarded. The east gable is made of stone rubble with brick quoins at the apex. It has square framing with girding beams, posts, studs with middle rails, and tension braces. The roof is a double trenched-purlin type with a diagonally-set ridge. The west gable-end truss includes jowled posts, a straight tie beam, vertical struts, a collar, and raking struts. The internal trusses are generally twin raking-strut trusses with straight tie beams, jowled posts, and both large and small tension braces. The interior has not been inspected.
The cowshed has an open bay that links with the barn, featuring 19th century barn doors at the rear. The front side faces west and includes two brick segmental arched openings and a simple loft opening. The rear side faces east and has brick piers with a boarded frame between, as well as an open south gable end, which is now covered by 19th and 20th century lean-to buildings. The roof is a single purlin type with three internal trusses, mostly reused. The interior has not been inspected.
