Description
The portal located about 100 yards west of Woodfield Farmhouse is dated 1832, as indicated by the inscription on the keystone. It is constructed from finely coursed sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The structure has a polygonal plan made up of three angled walls, with the outer wings returning towards the north and east. The south-west elevation features one central loop on each face of the wall, which stands approximately 12 feet tall, along with small square turrets topped with pyramidical caps at each end and sandstone coping. The north-east elevation includes a segmental arch with the date, which is believed to have led to a tunnel under the nearby road. This portal was likely associated with the former Tyberton Court, which was demolished around 1951 and was located to the north-west.
