Description
The Launder Tomb, located immediately south of the chancel of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, is a chest tomb dating from 1780. It is signed by W. Stretton of Nottingham. The tomb features a stone chest with "square vase" corners, a moulded plinth, and a cap. The front panel is made of slate and is inscribed in Latin, commemorating Margaret Launder, who died on December 22, 1780, at the age of 50. She was the wife of A. Collin Launder, the Rector of Elton church. The opposite side has a sandstone panel dedicated to the Reverend Abel Collin Launder, who was formerly of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and served as rector of this parish for 33 years. He passed away on August 29, 1803, at the age of 78. The tomb also features marble end panels.
