Description

A group of headstones located in the graveyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels along the south side of the nave, dating from the second half of the 18th century to the early 19th century, made of slate.

  1. The first headstone is rectangular, featuring fine detail and ornate lettering for Rebbecca Mann, wife of Thomas Mann, who died in 1769 at the age of 43.

  2. The second is large with a shaped head and decorative foliage for Thomas Mann, who died in 1779 at the age of 52.

  3. The third has a shaped head with delicate classical detail for Stephen Mann, who died on December 22, 1789, at the age of 30.

  4. The fourth features a shaped top and decorative surround for Rebbecca Mann, daughter of Stephen and Jane Mann, who died on April 11, 1811, at the age of 23. This headstone is included for group value.

  5. The fifth is tall with a shaped top and decorative foliage surround for Mary, wife of John Burrows, who died on October 5, 1779, at the age of 58, and also includes John Burrows, who died in 1780 at the age of 71.

  6. The sixth is rectangular with simple decoration for William Burrows, son of John and Mary Burrows, who died in 1766 at the age of 21.

  7. The seventh is tall with a shaped head and classical incised detail for Eleanor, wife of Thomas Mann, who died in 1788 at the age of 32.

  8. The eighth is large and rectangular with classical detail and a small relief carving at the head, inscribed in capitals: "Reader! The green sod on which thou stands covers the remains of John Burrows ...", signed by Wood, Bingham.

  9. The ninth has a round top with simple decoration for Mary Gibson, relict of John Gibson, who died in 1812. This headstone is included for group value.

  10. The tenth features a shaped top with a relief carving of a trumpeting angel and the legend "arise ye dead and come to Judgement" for John Gibson, who died on April 5, 1788, along with two sons.
