Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a small church located on Elton Sutton Lane. It has origins dating back to the 12th century but underwent significant restoration between 1855 and 1857. The exterior features incised rendering designed to resemble ashlar stone, with an ashlar plinth and a slate roof over the chancel. The church includes a west tower, a three-bay nave with a south porch, and a two-bay chancel.
The three-stage tower, rebuilt during the 1855-57 restoration, has clasping buttresses and is marked by horizontal bands. It features paired lancets for the west window and lancet openings for the bell chamber on the west side. The tower is topped with an embattled parapet and corner pinnacles, and includes a rainwater head dated 1856. The nave is also embattled and has a square porch, likely from the 19th century, on the south side, along with two broad round-arched windows with hood moulds. The chancel door has a segmental head, and the east window is a two-light design with geometrical tracery. On the north side of the nave, there is a small ogee-headed light and two larger two-light windows featuring geometrical tracery. Several lead rainwater heads are dated 1857.
Inside, the church is plain, with remnants of a south arcade consisting of three bays. The arcade features round, double-chamfered arches on round piers with moulded capitals, one of which displays nailhead decoration. A heavy 17th-century communion rail with turned balusters, large top and bottom rails, and two large ball and stalk finials is present. Additionally, there are mid-19th-century wall memorials dedicated to the Norton family of Elton Manor and one from 1822 to Francis Launder, created by Joseph Hall the younger of Derby.
