5 And 5A, Market Place

Nos. 5 and 5A on Market Place is a shop and office that was formerly a house, dating from the early 18th century with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick, partly rendered and painted, and features a hipped pantiled roof with a single brick gable and ridge stacks.

No. 5 has a single bay, two-storey front facing Market Place, which includes a 20th-century shopfront with a glazing bar window above. No. 5A has a two-storey, four-bay front with a plinth and a moulded brick band at the first floor, along with a dentillated eaves course. A 20th-century door has been inserted on the left in a former window opening, with three plain sash windows to the right. The first floor features four 20th-century top-hung glazing bar casements. All openings are topped with splayed moulded brick arches.

Inside, the right-hand room has full-height painted fielded and raised panelling, although the fireplace has been removed, leaving an arch over the doorway. In the alcove between the former fireplace and the doorway is a recess with a semi-circular head that contains a bench, likely a rent chair, with a hinged seat and solid curving arms, along with a six-panelled door. On either side of the overmantle are single late 18th-century prints varnished to the panels.
