Description
Nos. 84, 84A, and 86 on High Street in West Malling are two shops and an office. The building originated as a 15th-century open hall-house, which was refronted in the 18th century, with an additional 18th-century L-wing added to the rear. It is a timber-framed structure, with the front covered in Flemish bond brickwork, while the side elevation is stuccoed over painted brick and features a stone plinth. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain tiles. The building has two storeys and three windows; the first floor features three 12-pane sash windows set in moulded archtitraves with rubbed brick arches. The ground floor has 20th-century shopfronts. The right side elevation includes a 20th-century dormer and one sliding casement window. Inside, No. 84 has a roll-moulded dais beam and an 18th-century open fireplace with an entrance to a bread oven and a round-headed stoking hole. No. 84A features a crown post of square section with two head braces supporting the collar beam and jowled upright posts. No. 86 has a spine beam with a linear chamfer and lamb's tongue stop.
