Description

The entrance gates and railings to The Wilderness, located 150 meters west of Belton House, date from the early 18th century, were resited in the mid-18th century, and extended in the 19th century. The structure has an L-plan design. It features a wrought-iron gate with side screens and an overthrow adorned with a crest, flanked by three bays of railing that include ornamental panels, all set on a stone plinth.

Beyond the gate, there are square ashlar piers with plinths, blind-arcaded tops, and moulded cornices, each topped with urns. To the north, along Belton House Drive, there is a 19th-century cast-iron spearhead railing with a stone plinth and square piers, approximately 150 meters long. To the southeast, there is a similar railing, about 100 meters long, which includes an off-centre double gateway and square ashlar piers. At the eastern end, there is a smaller gate. The main gateway was previously located at Hough Hall.
