Description

The Lion Exedra, located at the south end of the Italian garden in Belton Park, is an early 19th-century structure designed by Jeffry Wyatville. It was resited in 1921 and is built of ashlar in the Classical Revival style. The exedra features a central recess with moulded coping, flanked by square piers that are topped with urns. This frames a panel that has a crest supported by volutes, with a lion-mask spout positioned above a semicircular basin. The structure has straight side walls with five bays, each displaying round arched blind arcades. The side walls also feature moulded coping and square end piers topped with urns, with a moulded bracket in each bay. The Lion Exedra is one of several estate buildings created by Wyatville for John, the first Earl Brownlow of Belton House, around 1815 to 1820. It is situated within Belton Park, which is listed on the Garden Register at grade I.
