Description

The west wing to Belton House, along with an associated boundary wall, forms part of the West Court. The west range dates to 1685-1688 and was designed by William Stanton, Master Mason, for Sir John Brownlow. A later 19th-century north range was added for the third Earl Brownlow, incorporating a 17th-century doorcase.

The west wing is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared stone, with a hipped Westmorland slate roof. The west range features an octagonal wooden cupola with a clock dial, round arched openings, a leaded ogee dome, and a finial. There are two large coped ashlar ridge stacks, two similar side wall stacks, and four smaller rear wall stacks, along with a plinth, flush quoins, and modillion eaves. The west range has a half-H plan, including a moulded elliptical carriage arch with imposts and a moulded keystone, and a pair of panelled wooden gates. It has 3 windows on each floor to the right, and to the left, 4 windows above 3 windows. A 6-panel door with an overlight, set within a surround similar to the windows, is also present. Five box dormers are above. The rear of the west wing has four dormers. Rear wings have regular fenestration with 5 windows to each floor and 4 dormers.

The north range includes a shaped round arched central gable and a moulded round arched doorway with a broken segmental pediment, flanked by smaller round arched niches, which contain figures. The original door has been replaced by a larger niche. To either side of the doorway are three windows, with four dormers above. Below are two windows on each side, followed by a door.

A boundary wall, approximately 70 by 30 metres, is attached to the southwest rear wing, enclosing a rectangular service yard. The wall is constructed of coursed squared stone with slab coping and ashlar corner piers with ball finials. Two doorways are located on the north side.
