BELTON PARK, Belton (North side) Steps and pair of statues on North Terrace at Belton House
GV II
Steps and pair of statues. Probably late C17. 7 ashlar steps with low balustrade walls, slightly moulded coping and square pedestals. On pedestals at the head of the steps, 2 life-size figures in Classical costume. Pevsner tentatively attributes these figures to C G Cibber, who carved a nearby sundial (qv) for Sir John Brownlow c1685-1700. Marsden & Barber describe them as being Italian, C18. This building appears within Belton Park which is on the Gardens Register at grade I. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N, Harris J & Antram N: Lincolnshire: London: 1964-1989: 139; Marsden J & Barber A: Belton House: London: 1985-1987: 46).
