Description
Hawthorpe Farm features two barns, stables, and farm buildings that date from around 1700, the late 18th century, circa 1830, and the 19th century. The structures are built from squared and coursed limestone and rubble, with ashlar quoins and roofs covered in pantiles, some hipped and some gabled. The layout is arranged around a courtyard.
The barn from circa 1700 is a single-storey building with stone-coped gables and double doors that have quoined reveals and a timber lintel. It includes two vertical breathers and a single opening at the eaves. This barn is connected to a second barn by a range built of red brick in the 19th century.
The late 18th-century barn is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a half-hipped pantile roof with a brick corbelled eaves course. It is also single-storey and has wide openings, one of which has been blocked in brick, along with vertical breather slots and two boarded openings at eaves level.
The stables, built around 1830, are made of squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. They have a hipped pantile roof with overhanging eaves and are single-storey with a four-bay front, where the end bays are slightly advanced. The stable doors are tall and planked, with a single door on the left and a pair on the right, both framed with ashlar surrounds and flat lintels that feature raised keystones. Inside, the stables have a king post roof. The stables are attached to the barn by a stone wall that is coped with pantiles.
