Description
Nos. 4 and 5 School Close are a pair of estate cottages built around 1840-1845 by William Burn. They are constructed from squared coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and have Welsh slate roofs with lead dressings. The cottages have stone coped gables and kneelers, along with a central ridge stack that originally had four tall octagonal ashlar shafts but now has two.
The cottages are designed in a T-plan and are single storey with attics. The front facade has four bays, which include a pair of rectangular ashlar bay windows with hipped stone roofs and three lights that have chamfered mullions. These bay windows are flanked by single fixed lights set in moulded surrounds. Above the bay windows, there are through eaves dormer windows with stone coped gables and two light chamfered mullioned windows.
At the rear, each cottage has a single storey range with a tall pair of ashlar octagonal stacks. In the angle between the two cottages, there is an ashlar porch with a hipped roof and a plank and muntin door.
