Description

The Old School and School House, built in 1840 by William Burn, is a former school and school house that has been converted into a house. Constructed from ashlar with a slate roof featuring lead dressings, it has stone coped gables adorned with ball finials and kneelers. The building has two wall stacks and a single ridge stack, each with pairs of shafts and cornices.

The garden front is a single storey with attics and consists of five bays. The end bays are one and a half storeys, projecting forward with their own gables. The central porch is also advanced, featuring a cornice, a moulded parapet with corner pinnacles, and a central bellcote topped with a knopped stone roof. The Tudor arched double doors are flanked by coats of arms. On either side of the porch, there are single two-light casement windows with chamfered mullions and hood moulds.

The advanced bays both include canted bay windows with hipped stone roofs and metal casements. On the first floor, there are two-light chamfered mullioned windows with cornices, and each gable has a rectangular recess. On the roadside, there are short single storey wings that enclose a small courtyard, featuring a Tudor doorway and two-light windows.
