Description
The ornamental archway, located 250 meters southwest from Hall in Stoke Rochford Park, dates back to 1676 and was re-erected in the 19th century as a landscape ornament for Sir Christopher Turnor. It is constructed of ashlar with coursed limestone rubble rear buttresses. The archway features a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a segmental pediment. The central archway is round-headed and rusticated, with a key block and is flanked by panelled Doric pilasters. The bases of the pilasters have blank semi-circular headed niches with key and impost blocks, along with cornices. Above the arch, there is a rectangular moulded panel that displays the date 1676 and the inscription "Quo conspedior eo humilior." Above the dentillated cornice, a keyed oculus is positioned, with rusticated panels slightly advanced on either side. It is believed that this archway originated from the stable block of the earlier house.
