Description

The seats, balustrades, and terraces to the east of Stoke Rochford Hall were constructed between 1841 and 1845 by architect William Burn for Sir Christopher Turnor. Made of ashlar, these features include upper and lower terraces with a parterre to the south. At the south end of the main terrace, there is a large stone seat with a panelled back, scrolled arm rests, and large orb finials. Two pairs of stone steps connect the terraces, and the lower side features panelled parapets linked by open balustrades, all supported by square panelled piers and topped with continuously moulded copings. At the south end of the lower terrace, there is a smaller seat supported on moulded corbels. The terraces provide a view over the beautifully wooded valley of the Witham and maintain their original landscape setting.
