Description

1 and 2 School Close are a pair of estate cottages built around 1840 to 1845 by William Burn. The cottages are constructed from squared coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. They have Welsh slate roofs with lead dressings, stone coped gables, and kneelers, along with a central ridge stack that originally had four tall octagonal ashlar shafts but now has two.

The cottages are designed in a T-plan and are single storey with attics. The front has four bays, including a pair of rectangular ashlar bay windows with hipped stone roofs and three lights with chamfered mullions. These bay windows are flanked by single fixed lights in moulded surrounds. Above the bay windows, there are through eaves dormer windows with stone coped gables and two light chamfered mullioned windows.

At the rear, each cottage has a single storey range with a tall pair of ashlar octagonal stacks. In the angle between the cottages, there is an ashlar porch with a hipped roof and a plank and muntin door.
