Description
The Gate Lodge and Outhouse at Drumlanrig Estate, likely designed by architect William Burn around 1840, is an asymmetrical single-storey cottage with a roughly L-shaped plan and a complex roof design. The building is constructed from stugged and squared pink rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and hoodmoulds, with some windows being mullioned.
On the east elevation, there is an advanced gable with a tripartite window to the right, and a gabled porch that projects from the re-entrant angle, featuring a depressed-arched door. The left bay is blank, while the single-bay end wall of the rear wing is deeply recessed on the right and has saw-toothed skews. The apex and rear wall-head stacks are adorned with ornamented flues, and the roofs are covered with slate. The rear wing has an asymmetrical north-facing wall-head gable at the northeast angle. Most of the windows are sash with lying-pane glazing.
