2 Laundry Cottages, Drumlanrig Estate

2 Laundry Cottages, located on the Drumlanrig Estate, date from the earlier to mid-19th century and were apparently remodeled around 1871 by Charles Howitt. Originally an L-plan laundry, the building was converted, likely in 1924 by J Laird of Glasgow, into two cottages. It features a gabled two-storey angle tower with a reduced height, along with single-storey wings to the north and west. Adjoining the north wall is a two-storey former mangle room. The exterior is constructed of snecked and stugged pink ashlar with polished dressings. The tower includes angle buttresses at the lower stage, two narrow east-facing lights at the ground level, and bipartite windows facing east and south. The upper stage is offset, and there is a depressed-arched door leading to the three-bay west wing, as well as a gabled porch for the two-bay north wing. Most of the sash windows have an 8-pane glazing pattern. The building features saw-toothed skews, wall-head and axial stacks, and slate roofs. Additionally, there are sheds, possibly used as laundry coal stores, built into the bank at the northwest, which have two segmental-arched openings and timber gates with ventilation slits.
