Description
The North East Workshop Range at Drumlanrig Mains, part of the Drumlanrig Estate, is an earlier 19th-century building with later additions and alterations made by J Laird around 1924. This two-storey house, which now serves as the estate office, is located at the southeast corner of a large sawmill and workshop complex. It is constructed from stugged and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and has a roof covered with graded slates.
The house features an asymmetrical three-bay design reminiscent of the style of William Burn, with hood-moulded mullioned windows that have lying-pane glazing. The east elevation includes an advanced gable on the left and a gabled porch in the re-entrant angle. It has axial stacks with octagonal flues, and the south elevation also displays a three-bay arrangement.
The sawmill and workshops have undergone some alterations and additions. The single-storey structures include lofts and are arranged around a principal courtyard that connects with the house, while a lesser courtyard to the west is linked via a pend. The long north range, which houses the sawmill, features a gabled wide wheel house next to two large windows at the west end of an otherwise blank north elevation. A high wall with square gatepiers connects the raised east gable of this range with the house. The south range, designated as the workshop, has a lengthy 13-bay south elevation, a gate leading to the lesser court at the west gable, and an altered gatehouse at the west end.
Timber stores open to the courtyard, with most roofs supported by cast-iron columns. Some gables feature segmental cart arches, and small-paned glazing is present throughout the complex, which also has coped apex stacks.
