Description

South Cottage, located at Drumlanrig Mains on the Drumlanrig Estate, dates from the earlier to mid-19th century. It is a pair of adjoining single-storey and attic cottages, each with three bays arranged symmetrically. The cottages are constructed from snecked, stugged, and squared rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and chamfered reveals. Each cottage has a depressed-arched doorway set within a gabled porch, with a bipartite window in the gabled bay on the ground floor (a skylight is positioned over the remaining bay), and a long low rear wing. The windows consist of lower sashes with two panes and upper sashes with six panes, and the roof features saw-toothed skews. The end and axial stacks have square flues that are linked by a coping. All roofs are covered with graded slates.
