Description

The Inigo Jones Gateway, located 90 metres southeast of Denton Manor in Denton Park, is a Grade I listed structure dating from the mid-17th century, likely designed by John Webb, with some minor alterations made in the 19th century. The gateway is constructed of ashlar stone and features a central semi-circular arch that has impost blocks and a rusticated raised keystone. This arch is flanked by rusticated Tuscan pillars that support a plain entablature topped with a broken segmental pediment, which has a ball finial at its center. The frieze above the arch has bifurcated ribbons that extend to either side of the keystone. On either side of the gateway are engaged square gate piers that have rusticated panels, side scrolls, and ball finials. A short length of 19th-century railing connects the outer piers, and all rusticated surfaces are vermiculated. The design of the gateway shares similarities with the now-demolished Welby Almshouses, which were dated 1653 and featured a similar bifurcated ribbon detail.
