Description
St. Christopher's Well, located in Denton Park, is a Grade II* listed well and grotto built in 1823. Constructed from tufa, the grotto is designed to look as though it is underground, featuring a naturalistic archway that leads into a circular cavern with a tufa vault that incorporates ammonite fossils. Beneath the wall facing the archway, there is a small circular well, from which a water-filled gully flows to the lake. Above the well, an inscribed stone displays three verses of a romantic poem along with the date of 1823 in Roman numerals. This structure was created as a landscape ornament for the Welby family within the grounds of Denton Park.
